Through the course of therapy each partner comes to understand that they can control only their own individual actions within the relationship. In addition, the therapy helps the couple to reach a point where they learn to behave in a way that is effective for the relationship. The best situation for success in couples therapy is when both partners are motivated to work within the therapeutic process. A simple question the individuals can ask for effective relationship communication according to theorist William Glasser, “Is what I am doing or saying effective?” Often times it is difficult in the middle of turmoil to recognize the things that one is doing or saying that create difficulties for a healthy relationship. Couples therapy helps each person recognize what they can do differently to bring about the desired relationship change.
